Day 20

You’ve heard of the escape from Colditz, Alcatraz and maybe even escape to the Chateaux.  Well now you’ve also heard of the escape from Tobermory.

Finally at 9.35am we escaped for the open sea.  Our original plan was in case the sea was still rough, to sail to Muck and pass between it and  Eigg.  Then go North around Rum and either overnight in Rum itself or continue round to a very remote anchorage called Canna.  Described in one of the tour sites as almost on the edge of humanity.

This will take us past Ardnamuchin Point and the Estate of Kincavel.  It is a little known fact that The Scotsman is in fact titled The Laird of Kincavel and it is always nice to check up on the property.

He was given the title one Christmas by his wife and is very proud of his 1 square foot of the Kincavel Estate.  He was disappointed this morning when both the Englishman and The Irishman refused to address him properly as “the much honoured Laird Jim”.

As it turned out, once we were in the channel it was really good sailing conditions.  A slow big rolling sea and blowing Force 4 gusting 5 at times.  Also from excactly the right direction for us.   So we simply went round the South of Muck and Rum and up the channel straight into Canna.  Sailing almost all the way.  Our engine hours were 0.8 of an hour.  Really just motoring out of the marina and into the anchorage.  36 miles run averaging 5.4 knots.  Canna was stunning and had a very unusual church dominating the bay.

Last night in Tobermory at 11pm

The imposing building of St Edward's Chapel.  Built in 1890, it was funded by the Marchioness of Bute in memory of her late father, Lord Howard of Glossop, providing a landmark and a place of worship for the many fishermen visiting Canna at this time.  Renovated for use as a study centre in 2000, the problems of water ingress were never successfully solved, the building currently not in use.
